Bicycle Film Fest- Boston 09

This weekend (Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st) BFF is coming to Boston for an epic two day event. Come out Friday night at 7pm to the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge for Goldsprint challenges (and to support our boys at Open, natch), then follow up with us on Saturday for movies and short films inspired by the love and thrill of bikes at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Sq. For a complete list of showings, check out the main page here.
Hit up the afterparty at Flat Top Johnny’s @10pm to end the festival on the right note with all the right people.

What is BFF you ask?

“In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide. 250,000 people are expected to attend this year.

The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the bicycle in all forms and styles. If you can name it – Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking Recumbents – we’ve probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance?
We bring together all aspects of bicycling to advocate its ability to transport us in various ways. Ultimately the BFF is about having a good time. We have been fortunate enough to include the work of established artists such as Jorgen Leth, Mike Mills, Jonas Mekas, Blonde Redhead, Swoon and Michel Gondry; as well as talented newcomers as part of our programming.”

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea comes to America

In Japan of 2008, critically acclaimed director and writer Hayao Miyazaki (of such films including Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro) debuted his latest animated masterpiece- Gake no ue no Ponyo, otherwise known as Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. To state briefly, the storyline revolves around the adventures of a 5-year old boy who meets a goldfish princess that longs to become human. I have yet to watch this film in Japanese, but I’m excited that Mr. Miyazaki was at comic con doing interviews about Ponyo and his inspirations.

The movie hits theaters on August 14th (american dub) featuring voices of Tina Fey, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett and others
