Bicycle Film Fest- Boston 09

This weekend (Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st) BFF is coming to Boston for an epic two day event. Come out Friday night at 7pm to the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge for Goldsprint challenges (and to support our boys at Open, natch), then follow up with us on Saturday for movies and short films inspired by the love and thrill of bikes at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Sq. For a complete list of showings, check out the main page here.
Hit up the afterparty at Flat Top Johnny’s @10pm to end the festival on the right note with all the right people.

What is BFF you ask?

“In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide. 250,000 people are expected to attend this year.

The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the bicycle in all forms and styles. If you can name it – Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking Recumbents – we’ve probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance?
We bring together all aspects of bicycling to advocate its ability to transport us in various ways. Ultimately the BFF is about having a good time. We have been fortunate enough to include the work of established artists such as Jorgen Leth, Mike Mills, Jonas Mekas, Blonde Redhead, Swoon and Michel Gondry; as well as talented newcomers as part of our programming.”

Bic Buddy Release Party- Toy Tokyo

This past weekend I took the red eye from LA to JFK and ended up sitting next to toy designer and friend Marka27. I had first met Victor “Marka27″ a couple years back at LAB, where we carried his Minigods series and also, had him featured in one of our art opening. He had flown out to LA for the release party of the Bic Buddys which, he designed the platform for. The new toy series for Bic Plastics launched at the beginning of August hit LA and now will be visiting 2 more major cities to mark the launch of its new mini-series.

So this week at Toy Tokyo from 6-9pm,  Cope2, Indie84, Kano, Marka27 and Sket will be signing. Last shop of the tour is in Chicago at the one and only Rotofugi on August 22nd where Jesse Hernandez and Marka27 be signing and hanging out with fans.

Congrats on the series guys- it looks great! And, thanks Marka for the toy, it will be added to my collection!

a peak into the studio & my life.

This year has been one of the most empowering and depressing times of my life all rolled into one. I have accomplished the world yet battled even more. One of the hardest decisions of this past year was to close the one thing that meant the most to me, the shop I dreamed about when I was young. A place I spent four years developing, designing, planning and basically living for. LAB was my life, the one and only thing that was always there for me, the thing I hated at times and fell deeply in love with the other times. I know I have been in hiding and have rarely been seen around Boston lately, which is very unlike me- but I swear its for the best. I’m also, not sure if I have actually told many people about my decision or why closing LAB’s brick and mortar location happened. All I can say is it was for the best and I have a whole new venture that I can’t get out of my mind. July 1st some of my good friends and I got the keys to a new start, a place where we could transform from a dirty and cold industrial space to place that thoughts, ideas and creations could come to life. Since, July we have spent almost everyday here creating a space that will bring a whole new light to Boston.

So there it is – a new project launching and an update on my life. We will be having an opening this fall so stay tune and hopefully now people can see and understand why I’ve been under the radar. Below is a sneak peak into our new world- so please enjoy and click here for more photos.
