Bicycle Film Fest- Boston 09

This weekend (Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st) BFF is coming to Boston for an epic two day event. Come out Friday night at 7pm to the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge for Goldsprint challenges (and to support our boys at Open, natch), then follow up with us on Saturday for movies and short films inspired by the love and thrill of bikes at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Sq. For a complete list of showings, check out the main page here.
Hit up the afterparty at Flat Top Johnny’s @10pm to end the festival on the right note with all the right people.

What is BFF you ask?

“In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide. 250,000 people are expected to attend this year.

The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the bicycle in all forms and styles. If you can name it – Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking Recumbents – we’ve probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance?
We bring together all aspects of bicycling to advocate its ability to transport us in various ways. Ultimately the BFF is about having a good time. We have been fortunate enough to include the work of established artists such as Jorgen Leth, Mike Mills, Jonas Mekas, Blonde Redhead, Swoon and Michel Gondry; as well as talented newcomers as part of our programming.”

Openly Biking Dirty 2009- This Sunday!

If  your in Boston this Sunday evening stop by Middlesex Lounge for Openly Biking Dirty 2009! The event is in support of The Jimmy Fund and the Pan Mass Challenge, our friend Chandler, is riding the PMC for the third year in a row. Over the past few years, Chandler and his team are excellent folks, friends of ours and definitely need our support to make this years ride better than last!

Sunday night will consist of socializing, dancing and roller-racing – a little bit of something for everyone, bike or no bike!  If you are not familiar with roller-racing, its pretty simple: head-to-head stationary bike races, 300m in distance, the speed and time are projected for the crowd to see – a great spectator sport and a good way to settle disputes with friends. The 300m seems to be the right distance for everyone, whether you race weekly or have ridden to work once in the past few years.  Our good friends over at OPEN Bicycle will be providing bicycles to race with so just bring your game face and checkbook!

gnomes by chris piascik

If you didnt know already, we love gnomes! Here are some cute ones drawn by our friend chris!

Gunsho takes over Boston.

For the past week I have gotten the pleasure of having James aka “Gunsho” paint 25 ft of windows at my shop. The piece that most artists spend 6 to 10 hours painting, took him right around 22 hours. Not only did he spend five days painting, he also had a 2 hour commute every day he came here. I can honestly say James is a part of the LAB family now. The time and devotion he put into painting the front of our shop is just incredible. The black outline alone was 3 days of painting and another 2 days for color. I’m so grateful for all of his hard work and effort, and hope everyone can check it out before it comes down. Click here for more pictures of the piece. Oh… and one last thing- this was the biggest piece he had ever done- his forty is 18×24″ drawings- no paint!

THE “DIED YOUNG, STAYED PRETTY” POSTER SHOW

LAB Boston is proud to present “Bare Knuckle Brawlers”, the poster show for “Died Young, Stayed Pretty”. The opening of the show will be Friday, June 26th from 7-10pm and will feature the following artists: James Quigley, Jesse Ledoux, Jeff Kleinsmith, theMiracle5, Dan McCarthy, Nate Duval, Darren Pasemko and other local artists. LAB has worked closely with Eileen Yaghoobian, Producer/Director and Kristin Groener to showcase artwork in connection with the documentary. (www.diedyoungstayedpretty.com)

Died Young, Stayed Pretty is a documentary about the underground poster culture in North America, from the ’60s psychedelic masters, like Victor Moscoso, to the gig poster crew today. The artists represented in the film “push further into the pulp to grab the attention of passersby, plastering art that?s both vulgar and intensely visceral onto the gnarled surfaces of the urban landscape,” says director Eileen Yaghoobian.

Outside of their own subculture these posterists are virtually unknown. “But within their ranks they make up an army of bare-knuckle brawlers, publicly arguing the aesthetic merits of octopus imagery and hairy ’70s porn stars.” They?ve created their own visual language and have created posters that are “strikingly obscene, unflinchingly blasphemous and often quite beautiful.” Yaghoobian’s film is the first (and maybe the last) of its kind.

The movie will be shown at the MFA, in Boston July 30 – August 7th, 2009- click here for more information and times. Also… click here to see the Facebook Event Page
